Important Notice for Hunters & Travellers

Before leaving Newfoundland and Labrador, please ensure you are not travelling with any of the following restricted items:

  • soil
  • potatoes or any parts of potato plants (including roots)
  • root vegetables such as turnips, carrots, and beets
  • plants with roots or soil attached, including flower bulbs, perennials, trees, and shrubs
  • containers with soil
  • used bags and burlap

Newfoundland and Labrador has three significant soil-borne pests that can spread through soil and root crops. If introduced to other parts of Canada, these pests could seriously impact Canada’s potato industry.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) works to help prevent the spread of these pests by restricting the movement of soil and soil-related materials at all exit points from Newfoundland and Labrador.

Please be prepared before travelling.

If you need to transport a restricted item, written authorization may be possible through a CFIA movement certificate.

For more information, contact the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) at (709) 772-4424.

For Emergency, call 911 or 956-2424.
This will alert the pager system.
